Custom homes set themselves apart from their cookie cutter counterparts because they often upgrade common features to better suit the owner’s taste. However, those added extras come at an added cost. Here are Esterline Construction design team’s top five favorite suggested upgrades to give your home a custom-home feel without breaking the bank.
Add Rich Colors
We know that one of the easiest ways to get a style upgrade on a budget is to update the paint color, so Esterline Construction’s designers encourage our clients to start thinking about color early and often. By choosing a warmer, slightly darker, but still neutral wall color, you can create a luxurious vibe to any room in your home. While you’re prepping your walls for a new paint color, now would be a great time to add onto your existing baseboards and crown molding. Walking through our custom homes, you’ll notice that wider baseboards, crown molding, and added chair rails add another level of richness to a space. We may also suggest another idea: add picture-framing, which is thin molding in a wall space that helps define the space. This added molding also allows for a greater custom feel as more paint options come from the segmented wall space.
Nothing stands out in a luxury home quite like quality built-in wall units. Many of our clients find that the family room is a great place to start with built-ins. Whether it’s a wall unit to house stereo and TV equipment, bookcases to showcase books and pictures, or bench seating under windows to create a reading area, the family room provides endless opportunities for organizing your space. In the kids’ playroom, shelving for storing their toys or books makes clean up a breeze. Our clients enjoy tidier and more organized home offices when they choose to add bookcases or filing cabinets. For those who enjoy entertaining, built-in cabinets for displaying fine china or collectables is a must. Many of our clients also choose to include a wine rack near the kitchen or butler’s pantry area. For our clients with children, we may also suggest adding a mudroom with space for each child to store sports’ equipment and school bags. It’ll become the hardest working room in your home.
Ditch Dated Lighting
An older home can instantly improve with updated lighting. Esterline Construction designers recommend adding newer, more energy-efficient fixtures, which may even save you money in the long run. In a newer home, we encourage our homeowners to incorporate spotlights into their initial design to accentuate artwork or sconces in the bathroom or bedroom. Even a dimmer switch to the dining area will provide the perfect lighting for those dinner parties you will be hosting.
Go for Faux Flooring
Many of our beautiful estate homes feature travertine tile and hardwood floors. Luckily you have many options to choose from to get a similar look for less. While hardwood floors can be costly, we do remind our homeowners that they will endure because they can be refinished over and over when they start to look worn. However, when budget is a limiting consideration, today’s engineered hardwood floors are a fraction of the cost of real hardwoods, are beautiful, and can provide many years of beauty. Many homeowners love the look of travertine tile because the natural stone provides interesting texture and colors. Fortunately, many tile options are now available that imitate the look of stone. Not only are these options more affordable, but they also may be easier to care for.
Swap Out Accessories
In any designer home it’s the small details that stand out. Swapping out basic cabinet pulls to more unique, but still functional, pulls is a great low-cost update. While some pulls can cost you $10-$20 per pull, we encourage our DIY clients to shop around for the best price. You can find uncommon cabinet pulls at Hobby Lobby, just be sure to shop with a coupon for additional savings. Antique or vintage stores often are a great source for unique pulls too. Shopping online may give you the most options for the best price. Look for uncommon ways to spruce up your bathrooms such as adding a custom accent frame to a plain builder’s mirror or upgrading your towel rack to one that matches your existing fixtures.
Do It Yourself or Call a Pro
While many of our suggestions are possible for a Do-It-Yourselfer, many of our clients prefer to call in a professional to help with bigger projects. Please contact us at Esterline Construction if you need help upgrading your space.
